Boards and Commissions
The City of Leeds is committed to fostering civic engagement and community involvement through its various boards and commissions. These groups play a vital role in shaping city policies, providing recommendations, and ensuring that local government remains responsive to the needs of its residents.
1. Planning and Zoning Board
Purpose: The Planning and Zoning Board is responsible for reviewing development plans, zoning applications, and land-use proposals to ensure they align with the city's comprehensive plan and zoning ordinances.
Meeting Schedule: Second Thursday of every month at 6:00 PM at City Hall.
Responsibilities:
- Review zoning requests
- Propose amendments to zoning regulations
- Provide recommendations on land development
Membership: The board consists of seven members appointed by the Mayor and City Council. Each member serves a term of three years.
2. Leeds Historical Commission
Purpose: The Leeds Historical Commission aims to preserve and protect the historical and cultural heritage of Leeds. The commission works to identify significant landmarks, promote historic preservation, and educate the public about the city's history.
Meeting Schedule: Quarterly on the first Monday at 5:30 PM at City Hall.
Responsibilities:
- Oversee historical preservation efforts
- Recommend historical landmarks for designation
- Provide guidance on historical renovations
Membership: The commission is composed of five members, each serving a four-year term.
3. Board of Adjustments
Purpose: The Board of Adjustments handles variances and appeals related to the city's zoning ordinances. Residents and developers who seek exceptions to zoning regulations can petition this board for review.
Meeting Schedule: Fourth Tuesday of every month at 5:00 PM at City Hall (if needed).
Responsibilities:
- Hear appeals on zoning decisions
- Grant or deny variances based on zoning requirements
- Ensure developments adhere to the city's master plan
Membership: This board consists of five members appointed by the City Council, with each member serving a term of three years.
4. Parks and Recreation Board
Purpose: The Parks and Recreation Board oversees the development, maintenance, and enhancement of the city's parks, green spaces, and recreational programs. They ensure that Leeds residents have access to high-quality outdoor activities and sports facilities.
Meeting Schedule: Second Thursday of every month at 6:30 PM at the Leeds Civic Center.
Responsibilities:
- Plan and implement community recreational activities
- Maintain park facilities and ensure they meet community needs
- Develop long-term strategies for park improvement
Membership: Seven members serve on this board, appointed by the Mayor. Terms last for three years.
5. Industrial Development Board
Purpose: This board works to promote economic growth in Leeds by facilitating industrial and commercial development. The Industrial Development Board collaborates with businesses and investors to ensure the city's long-term economic sustainability.
Meeting Schedule: As needed. Meetings are held at City Hall.
Responsibilities:
- Approve industrial development projects
- Provide recommendations on economic incentives
- Work with developers to bring new business to the city
Membership: The board consists of seven members who are appointed to six-year terms.
6. Library Board
Purpose: The Library Board oversees the operations of the Leeds Jane Culbreth Library. It ensures that the library meets the educational, informational, and cultural needs of the community.
Meeting Schedule: Bi-monthly on the third Wednesday at 4:00 PM at the Leeds Jane Culbreth Library.
Responsibilities:
- Manage library policies and services
- Advocate for library funding
- Organize public events and educational programs
Membership: Five members serve on this board, with appointments made by the City Council. Members serve staggered five-year terms.
