Waste Management Takes Over Garbage Service in Leeds
Leeds, AL-The City of Leeds announces that Waste Management (WM) has replaced GFI for Garbage Service in the city. This action was not initiated by the City of Leeds, but it was a corporate takeover with the purchase of GFI by WM. There was no advance warning for the city to notify anyone in advance and the action was effective immediately.
Nothing should change with the residential or business garbage service. The garbage cans should remain the same. The service should remain the same. The pickup days will remain the same. The pricing should remain the same.
Garbage customers will need to reach out to Waste Management to set up their accounts.
WM sent out a flyer last week from WM to all former GFL customers in Leeds, providing important contact information for WM. This flyer included the updated customer service number that residents should now use for all Waste Management-related inquiries and issues.
If you did not receive that information, the WM phone number to call to set up your account is 866-971-2260. You can also visit their website at https://wm.com.
If you encounter any service issues with WM and are unable to reach a resolution through their customer service, please remember to submit a complaint using the city’s online service issue form. This submission notifies both our city staff and WM’s designated contacts, officially initiating the resolution timeline for your concern.

Public Service Announcement: Help Keep Leeds Clean and Flood-Free
The City of Leeds is committed to maintaining a clean and beautiful community, and we need your help! In addition to regular garbage service, the city provides trash and limb pickup, but there are some important guidelines to follow to keep our city running smoothly and prevent issues like flooding.
Please remember:
When doing yard work, do not blow leaves into the street, ditches, or culverts. This can block drainage and cause flooding, which affects everyone in the community.
If you hire a contractor for landscaping or yard work, it’s important to know that they are responsible for bagging and removing leaves, limbs, and debris. The city pickup service is not meant for contractor waste.
If you’re doing your own yard work, please bag all leaves and place them by the curb for pickup. Limbs and small branches should also be left neatly at the curb for collection.
For bigger projects like tree removal or construction debris, you are responsible for arranging removal—either by securing a dumpster or taking the material to the dump yourself. Our city’s service is designed for small yard waste and regular household items, not large trees or full clean-outs.
By following these guidelines, we can keep Leeds cleaner and prevent issues caused by improper waste disposal. For more information about the city’s trash and limb pickup policy, please visit https://leedsalabama.gov.
Thank you for helping us keep Leeds green and flood-free!

City of Leeds Public Works Conducts Total Clean Up at I-20 Exit 140 Under Bridges
The City of Leeds Public Works Department recently undertook a comprehensive cleanup effort under the bridges at I-20 Exit 140 on Highway 78, both eastbound and westbound, throughout the month of June. This significant project involved the removal of overgrown bushes, trees, grass, and debris from the sides of the road under both bridges and in front of the mall.
Despite this area not being the direct responsibility of the City of Leeds, the Public Works team recognized its importance in shaping the first impression of visitors entering the city. The cleanup effort included removing small trees and grass that had taken root in the cracks of the concrete and along the roadway shoulders where water flow had deposited seeds. Additionally, trash was collected and the limb truck was utilized to dispose of the debris.
Public Works Supervisor Johnny Warren commented, “This is a busy spot with a lot of traffic coming in and out of our city and we want to keep this area looking good for our visitors!”
The City of Leeds expresses its gratitude to the Public Works Department for their diligent work and ongoing contributions to the city's overall well-being. Their efforts not only enhance the city's appearance, but also reflect the community's commitment to maintaining a welcoming environment for all who visit.
